Five Leading Reformers: Lives at a Watershed of History by Christopher Catherwood is a well-written and easy to read overview of five leading lights of the Protestant Reformation:

* Martin Luther
* Thomas Cranmer
* John Calvin
* John Knox
* Ulrich Zwingli

In the introduction, the author discusses how he compiled the details and what his personal views are so that the reader is aware of the author’s background. He also states in the brief introduction that this is a work compiled from secondary sources and provides the reader with detailed notes for those who wish to pursue the subject more thoroughly and perhaps enticing some to go to the original works of some of these Reformers.

Each of the main chapters provides the reader with a mini biography of each individual, highlighting events which likely shaped their lives as well as documents items and events of historical significance. In addition to the mini biography, the author mentions both positive and negative attributes of each reformer included in this brief collection, pointing out some of the differences between differing views and people to hold to different tenets of each persons‘ writing. The author also cautions the reader to keep to the spirit of the reformation and go to Scripture Alone for final authority, not to a specific doctrine or tradition. While I myself am protestant, I think that this book might also be a helpful overview for a curious reader from either a Roman Catholic or an Eastern Orthodox background as it provides a balanced historical overview.
